ieConnect's work in South Asia focuses on the link between transport, mobility, and gender equality. The lack of safe and accessible transportation is a significant barrier to women's access to education and economic opportunities across the region. Studies in India demonstrate that the fear of street harassment impacts women's educational choices, leading them to select lower-quality institutions for safer travel routes, affecting their academic training, labor opportunities, and future earnings. Similarly, in Bangladesh, public transport safety can limit women's mobility and influence their labor supply decisions. Safety concerns during commutes are also an issue in Pakistan, contributing to substantial gender gaps in middle school enrollment and retention, especially in remote areas. Research supported by ieConnect generates causal evidence on the implications of these challenges and evaluates the effectiveness of interventions designed to enhance women's safety, mobility and increase access to opportunity in the region.
