Raising environmental awareness has led to the proliferation of environmental standards. These standards aim to help organisations reduce their environmental impact and increase their operating efficiency. Using detailed French administrative data, I estimate the effect of voluntary environmental certification on firms’ export performance. I observe that environmental certification positively impacts the probability of exporting (extensive margin) and the value of exports (intensive margin) through an increase in the export price. The probability of export for certified firms increases by 1.4%, while the value of exports increases by 10.8% following certification, through a 2.2% increase in the price and a 9.6% increase in the quantity exported. The results are driven by a demand effect, which varies across destinations, products, and firms.
